Dunes of Gor

~Welcome to the place of Gorean Beginnings~

Within these pages you will find information to help you along in the play region known as Dunes of Gor. While this information is not all inclusive, it is the foundation of our Gorean virtual world.  Please know that we recognize the writings of Norman as fictional and therefore a delightful venue for role-play.  The majority of the typists in this setting are role-players not lifestylers; however, we welcome all and enjoy the creation of story together ... so if you are 18 years or over click the title "Dunes of Gor" above and enter within.

Common Gorean terms A/all should know
“Tal” – a common greeting of the Free.  This greeting is acceptable to bestow upon a slave as well.  Slaves may greet with the word “Tal” although it is more common for a slave to greet with “this girl greets Y/you”   “Hail” – a greeting reserved for those of status.  An Ubar would be greeted with “Hail” rather than with “Tal” by those of the land.   “I wish you well” – the common farewell.   “I ask your favor” – a way to say please   There is no special term for thank you.  Manners being at their height in Gor society, everyone and anyone can be thanked in whatever fashion the speaker desires.  Even slaves can be told thank you although many will fear a Master/Mistress who lavishes praise upon them too highly.  Simple phrases of “good girl” will thank a slave beyond anything else that can be uttered.

Gorean Titles
Ubar – Ubar is an official title.  The one baring the title should be call Ubar or Master but never a combination of the two.   Administrator and Regent – are official titles and like Ubar should be used without the combination term Master.   Most Free and slaves would address persons given these titles by their title as a sign of respect to their position in the lands.

Gorean Prices
No price is fixed in Gorean; haggling is the way of the land.  If you wish to purchase something haggle and barter over the price.  Once a price is met that both can agree upon the exchange of gold is made.  For many veteran typists the haggle is as much fun as the sell so enjoy this process.

Where to sit and how to pass
The Gorean generally sit upon the ground, both slave and Free.  Chairs are often reserved for the higher castes (Grand Masters, Ubars, Administrators, etc) and many within the land find chairs uncomfortable at best.  Free males generally sit cross-legged while Free women generally kneel upon the ground with knees tight and hand upon their thighs palms down.  Slaves always kneel and the pose depends on what type of slave and who is within the room.  Slaves never nadu when a Free Female is within the room for it is rumored that if a Free Female sees the oils of a slave’s body she will tear her clothes from her form and beg to be turned slave.  Slaves never sit alone in a chair for it could result in the loss of her life.    Goreans will always pass on the left when walking in the streets.  It is believe that this is because the sword arm is the right thereby leaving the sword to a quick release if needed when passing another.

Free Women
Free Women should be treated with respect and honor.  While considerable difference remains between Free Woman and Free Men, the fact that Gorean is hierarchal means that a Free Woman of higher caste/status/station would be automatically give a deep level of respect by Free Men of lower station.    Free Women may speak without permission and may speak openly, and may be as bold as they desire. However, it would serve the Female to be mindful that her freedom is granted by the Free Men and can be taken from her as easily as it is allowed.    The term Lady is often used in connection with Free Women; although a slave would never call the Free Female Lady but rather Mistress.

Why have Free Females in a slave state?
The vital function of Free women is reproduction and child care.  Free women are seen as the lifeblood of a caste and therein perhaps are the stem of their respect from the Free males of the land. The child of a slave is legally considered a slave therefore few free men will have children with their slaves.  Childbearing is considered a privilege of Free women.   Additionally, it is Free women who care for and teach the children in their crucial beginning years of development.   Slaves are never permitted to teach Free people even children.  Slaves are often seen as a playmate to children and nothing more.

Gorean Children
The Gorean are especially fond of children and do not inflict suffering upon the children.  Whether male or female the children of Gorean are given much freedom until such time as they become young adults.  It is at the age of maturity that the rites of Gorean begin to take hold of the lives of the young people.  Most Free women sell their children into slavery upon birth especially the females.  This practice insures the continual growth of the caste state and the need of the Free women within it.

Common Slave Etiquette
All slaves address all Free as Master/Mistress. Slaves refer to their own Master/Mistress as “my” Master/Mistress. Slaves may not call a Free person only by their name.  Should Tron_Carloff enter the slave would greet this Free person simply as Master indicating otherwise in the post to whom the greeting is destine for. (i.e. – slavegirl greets the entering one (Tron_Carloff) with a bowing head and words uttered “a girl greets Master humbly”) ·        Slaves are permitted to use their Master/Mistress’s name in private and with their permission

Slave Begging
The only ones allowed to beg are the slaves of the land and it is never for money but rather for the pleasure of serving another or the honor of speaking/entering/exiting.  As Gorean is a caste state, those without are taken care of in one manner or another by those within the same caste.

Slave Serving
Slaves who are waiting in a serving area must pay attention to all Free persons and willing offer to serve Them.  Any Free person who requests a drink/meal should not have to wait long to be served if a slave waits in the serving area.  However, if all slaves are currently serving a Free person should patiently wait for the slave to finish her serve and then beg to serve Him/Her.   Under no circumstances should a Free Female ever serve another.  This action is reserved for the slave and will lessen the stature of the Free Female in the eyes of the already dominating Male.   In a group setting there is a hierarchy to the serving order.  An Ubar is always served first in recognition of his status; followed by the Free Companion of the Ubar; then the Administrator; the Administrator’s Free Companion; the Regent; any other high ranking Free Male; your Master/Mistress; any other Free Companions of high ranking Males; all other Males; all other Free Companions.  In the event the Grand Master is present then He and His Free Companion are served before the Ubar.

Gorean Entrances & Exits
Paga taverns – Slaves do not need to beg permission to enter a paga tavern.  They should enter and move quietly either to the serving area or to their Master/Mistress if he/she is present.  This is a common space and is recognized as such; therefore begged entrances are not required.   Houses of the Worthy – Entering any space that is not common requires a slave to beg entrance.  The accepted form is called karta (see forms for more details).  Only when granted leave to enter may a slave grace the establishment with her presence.  The slave should greet and thank whomever allow her entrance.   Slaves must beg permission to leave any establishment whether common or private.  If the slave’s Owner is present only the Master/Mistress owning the slave may give permission to leave.  If the Owner is not present then any Free person may be asked for permission to leave.

Slave Training
Female children from early ages learn subtle ways to please men. Included in the lessons are such things as preparation of exotic dishes, the arts of walking, standing and being beautiful, the care of a man's equipment, and basic dances. Upon coming of age females must also learn how to submit to a man. As the threat of enslavement is a very real danger for all women, all are taught these basic skills so they are prepared for the possibility of enslavement.  Most females would prefer to be a slave over being killed. Once a female is enslaved her training intensifies whether at the hand of a Master or in the training sheds of the local slaver.  Kneels, serves, dances are all taught to the slave.  Rarely are slaves left unopened during training therefore the trained slave will know full well how to please men.

Slave silks
The color of a slave’s silks indicates to the Master/Mistress immediately the state of their actions. In the world of "Dunes of Gor" the below silks colors are recognized. White – Virgin slave/not opened.  This slave is in training and would be able to perform a basic kneel (karta and tower only); would be only allowed to serve room temperature liquids; and would never be permitting to gaze upon a Free.  This is the status of all new slaves upon registration. Yellow – A serving slave.  This slave is owned by the establishment in which he/she serves.  They may warm laps, kiss, serve drinks, be teased, and be purchased for an evening’s pleasure.  Often times the price of a room includes the use of a yellow silk slave.  To secure yellow silks seek out the owner of a tavern or brothel. Red – An opened slave.  This slave has been open to men and the fire within her belly has been lit.  These slaves are owned by a Master/Mistress and will do as the Owner commands.  Red silks are skilled in the art of dance, serves, and pleasuring of the flesh.  It is up to the Owner to give leave to the slave’s usage.  Red silks may only be earned are demonstration of knowledge by the slave repeatedly to a tavern owner or to the high caste members. House colors – Higher members of caste (Title and Charter Holders) will have one or two specific house colors for Their slaves.  These colors can be found listed in the profiles of the Master/Mistress.  Slaves belonging to a particular house will wear that house’s colors when in public.  To be striped of the house colors and forced to wear red/yellow silks is a grave dishonor.  To see a list of house colors check the link on the main page side panel. Black – Black silks are worn by restricted slave when in common houses.  The color of the silks designates that the slave may not serve another without the direct orders of their Owners.  This method of designation allows the slave to be protected while in public; however a rowdy black silked slave could be striped of her silks by another Master who finds her unworthy of the color.

Dunes of Gor
The world in which we role play is set on the planet known from the books of John Norman as counter-Urth. This is Gor, a world on the far side of the sun and directly opposite the planet Earth with the same length of year and thus neither planet is seen in the night sky of the other. Planet Gor is our world and the main map in the Member's Forum covers that area of land over which we roam and build our Homestones, but, within the game, characters are not limited to those tribes which traditionally inhabit the area of the map. Options allow diverse character creation including Tribe, Title, Families, Caste and Color. In the case of Caste and Color, color can have one of two meanings depending on the status of the character. Frees (all none-slaves) have a color which reflects their Caste or sub-Caste. In the case of slaves color always refers to their Silks if they are given one by their owner. In the case of Families, these are surnames reserved by the leading family member (The first Member to register a new surname has the option to password protect the name from others using it and, by this method, only allow family members to register with the same name. Slaves never get this option and "Family" in their profile is replaced with "Owner". Therefore, a slave is never a family member but only ever owned by a Free. Titles convey status in our system and also activate interactive functions the Title-holder can use. An un-owned slave can be 'taken' by a Free but a reasonable RP in chat should take place and scroll saved for inspection if called for in the case of dispute. To take a slave is just a mater of using your character editor to name the un-owned slave and, provided they do, in deed, have no owner, you can place your name on their profile as the new Owner (a slave has the right to dispute your action in our system but, provided there was a reasonable RP involved, the manager will uphold the Free's action). There are more functions relating to Titles. In the case of Tribe, all Free's may choose or change it at will. Slaves never get to choose or change Tribe. Only the owner can do this for them. They can, however, belong to a tribe. Final note; a slave can be set free by an owner who always has the option to change the slave's status in this respect.
